One habit that changed my life

One habit that changed my life is…

Making my bed. Yep, that’s right! It might sound silly to you but it has definitely impacted my life emphatically. And anyone who knows me knows that I am very insistent on making the bed every day.

When I was a kid, I never really understood why my mother always pressured me to make my bed. Even just a few years ago, making the bed didn’t make any sense to me. After all, what good does it do to make the bed?

Speaking from my own experience, it does so much good!!

Now, I’m so obsessed with making the bed, that I forced my roommate to do it every morning because I got annoyed every time I looked on her side of the room and discovered an untidy and cluttered bed. (Aargh!!) But, she gradually started doing it every day on her own and now it has become her habit too. (So proud of myself, haha!😎)

Okay, it’s so simple. It just takes like 2 minutes to make the bed and the benefits of it go beyond a good-looking bedroom.

They say that the simplest things can make big differences. That is exactly what I find with making my bed every single morning.

Feeling of accomplishment: Making the bed in the morning gives me a sense of accomplishment. Taking only a few minutes of my time each morning ignites a positive tone for the rest of the day. This sense of accomplishment (no matter how big or small) sparks our inner fire to continue achieving.

Make your bed to lower your stress: Decluttering makes a huge impact on my mental health. By making my bed, I start to declutter my space. Clutter reminds me of how scattered and unorganized I am and it just drags me down. I find a tidy space to be very calming.

Looks and feels better: There’s just something about a made bed that feels better at the end of a long day. Maybe because it makes the bed look cleaner (…even if you actually haven’t changed your sheets in weeks😛) or because when a bed looks good, it also feels good. Few things match the sheer joy of climbing into a smoothly made bed with a lightly fluffed pillow after a hectic day.

Leads to other good habits: Once I got in the habit of making my bed every day, I found that other good habits followed naturally. I now kept my clothes off the floor and cleaning became a necessary custom that I welcomed. I craved a little more organization because now I started to appreciate how it made me feel.

Positive Mindset: We’ve all been there. You have had a very stressful day and all you can think of is to get to your bed and sleep. You get to your room and it’s just how you left it — A BIG MESS! You find clothes everywhere and your bed isn’t made. This drops your mental state even lower. Now think about this — when you enter the room and it’s tidy doesn’t your mood elevates instantly? You look forward to climbing into the crisply made bed. As I said, it literally takes 2 minutes to make your bed. Two minutes every day will leave your mood elevated every night.

In the book, The Power of Habit, Charles Duhigg explains that: “Making your bed every morning is correlated with better productivity, a greater sense of well-being, and stronger skills at sticking with a budget. It’s not that a family meal or a tidy bed causes better grades or less frivolous spending. But somehow those initial shifts start chain reactions that help other good habits take hold.”

So take those couple of minutes every morning to make your bed!

  1. Yes, making our bed in the morning does feel like an accomplishment. Decluttering always helps to keep our room clean and tidy and spreads positivity. Vaastu Shastra also suggests to keep our house clean to get rid of negative energies. Great post. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  2. Making the bed every morning is at the top of positive things I do for myself every day. I found it even more important during COVID and my life as a retiree.

  4. You mentioned some great points here. I always knew making your bed in the morning is important but didn’t actually realise the reasonings behind it.

I have really enjoyed reading this!

  6. I enjoy reading this post, thanks! I also love making my bed. Seeing my bedroom all made up, clean and organized gives me such a wonderful feeling of home sweet home. Before I went out on a Church convention, I would clean the entire house. I would wash laundry, dust the entire house, clean the bathrooms, kitchen and bathrooms. I would even steam clean the carpets that when we would come home after the convention and open the door it felt so good to come home to a clean house. The fresh scent of a clean house would hit my nostrils and everything in order just felt so… good! I loved it. On a daily bases my bed is not made up because I have a very sick husband who needs to lay down and unmakes the bed. I had to make adjustments and compromises in this area of my life. I admit sometimes it’s just depresses me to see our bedroom in this condition. To me the most important rooms are the bathrooms, kitchen, bedrooms and living room for entertaining guests. I do my best in all the other areas of the house but my bedroom not so much. I rather have a happy comfortable husband who suffers constantly in pain due to two back surgeries and other aliments. Then my happiness of a cleaned up made up bed. I do miss that though. Thanks again for sharing this post. Charity 💖

    • That’s so sweet of you Charity to share your story here. Well, it doesn’t matter if you’re making your bed or not, your priorities are clear (comfort for your husband), which is great. I hope he gets well soon and you go back to your old habit of making the bed and keeping it tidy as you like. 😊💖

      • Thanks Shreya, but going back to a made up bed will never be. My sweet husband has had two spinal surgeries and has been suffering for about 17 years now. By God’s grace if He heals him that will be a miracle. He has been diagnosed recently with a bone desease. Making our beds is the least of my problems. Thanks for your best wishes sweetie – xo Charity 💖

  7. Thanks for sharing this! Making the bed is the simple practice that we tend to dismiss, but was it actually does is much more valuable. It’s not about making the bad, it’s about what it teaches you and what you don’t do, like procrastinate, like feeling lazy…and all the stuff you’ve described above. There’s a big brain science behind this simple (bed making) thing 🙂

  8. Couldn’t agree more! I saw this whole motivational pep talk where the host spoke of the same thing, and he said “even if you have a bad day at least you have a clean bed to come back to”. Simply cannot forget this🤗♥️

  9. Making the bed as soon as you get up means a day well begun…and then the entire day goes well…it is an indication that the person a had a sound stress free sleep ….it also reflects the calmness of mind ..a person at peace..someone who is not rushing against time..
    Well articulated Shreya .
    Stay blessed 🙏😇

  10. I arranged my bed.
Now, it’s time to sleep. 🛏️😴😉

Worthy advice. Arrangement and organization of our work is important. Cleanliness has a positive impact on our mind. It increases our productivity. In the same way, we should arrange and organise our smartphones and laptops. There is a lot of useless stuff today.

Thank you for the post Shreya. 👍😃

  11. I agree! And your mother sounds so much like mine. As kids, we were ordered to make up our beds every morning and it did make for a more productive day. And a clean place, for me too, always lifts my moods. It’s crazy how one good habit can turn into three good habits, then five, then ten. Great post! And truthful! ❤

  12. This is actually one of my goals for this year – make my bed for 21 days straight. I love messy beds because it feels comfortable but in making the bed on mornings it makes my room look more organized.

  13. Makes sense!

Reminds me of something someone said about working from home, they worked in pajamas or whatever and then they dressed as if they were actually at work and noticed a difference in productivity.

I guess it’s a subconscious or psyche thing.
